The cheese sauce mainly consists of cheddar or parmesan cheese. Mac & cheese can be served as a side dish or a main dish and this easy recipe is full of flavor, extremely rich, and extra cheesy and creamy.

Ingredients

1. Elbow macaroni - 1 ¾ cup
2. Salt - add to taste
3. Black pepper - to taste (optional)
4. Chili flakes - to taste (optional)
5. Butter - 3 ½ tablespoons
6. Flour - 3 ½ tablespoons
7. Milk - 2 ⅓ cup
8. Mustard powder - ½ teaspoon
9. Garlic powder - ¼ teaspoon
10. Cream cheese - ½ cup
11. Cheddar cheese - 1 cup
12. Mozzarella cheese - ½ cup
13. Pasta water

Directions

1. The first step to make mac & cheese is to cook elbow pasta. Boil salted water in a large pot and cook pasta according to the directions written on the package. When the pasta is almost boiled, turn off the stove and reserve ½ cup of pasta water. After reserving, drain the pasta.

2. Take a large or a medium saucepan (it is up to your choice). Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. After melting the butter, add flour. Whisk butter and flour mixture constantly for 1 minute.

3. Now pour in milk, add garlic powder and mustard powder in a saucepan while whisking the sauce slowly. Bring this sauce to a low boil by increasing the heat slightly. Make sure to whisk constantly.

4. Reduce heat and add cream cheese into the sauce and whisk.

5. This time remove the saucepan from the heat. Add cheddar and mozzarella cheese into the sauce half at a time. Place the saucepan back onto the stove and whisk the cheeses until it melts.

6. Season the sauce with black pepper, salt, and chili flakes.

7. After the sauce is seasoned well, toss in the pasta. Thin the sauce with pasta water as needed and serve this dish immediately.
