The Origins of the French Toast

Although the title of the dish seems to clearly state where it comes from, as food explorers, we must not blindly believe in that. Or shall we?

Certainly, not. We, at foodies.pk, believe in going to depths and double-checking the authenticity of our pool of food-knowledge. So, upon researching, we came to know that French Toast does not belong to France originally. The first-ever bread, similar to French Toast, got prepared in the Roman Empire. And several countries at that time were using more or less similar recipes to convert stale bread into edible. Thus, in French, it is more accurately known as Pain Perdu, which means lost bread.

Even before that, a reference to French Toast should also get noticed in the Latin compilation of recipes. Over here, a French toast resembling recipe gets referred to as Aliter Dulcia, which means another sweet dish.

Ingredients for French Toast

Every type of French Toast involves some primary ingredients without which the recipe will lose its essence. Before you try a different type of French Toast or invent yourself, check whether the following ingredients are available.

  • Bread
  • Milk or milk alternatives
  • Eggs
  • Salt (It is a must-have for a balanced flavor.)
  • Butter (You may substitute it with oil. However, frying in butter enhances the taste, and it’s best not to substitute ingredients for best results.)
  • Sweeteners
  • Flavorings (French Toast tastes delicious when you add some vanilla extract or powdered cinnamon.)

Types of Milk used in French Toast

There is certainly a diversity of milk options in the market. You can find and use different types of milk, depending on your preference and dietary requirements. When making French Toast, some people also substitute milk with heavy cream.

The usage of cream in the recipe results in a denser and richer flavor. However, when making the best classic French Toast, it is ideal to use milk. These are several types of milk you can use in the recipe:

  • Whole milk
  • Skimmed milk
  • Non-dairy alternatives, such as almond milk

Note, the flavor might change slightly according to the milk type. Also, never substitute milk with milk powder while making French Toasts.

How to Cook the Best Classic French Toast?

To prepare a fine and classic French Toast, you only need a total of ten minutes. Please take a deep bowl and crack two large eggs in it. Now, mix in about one cup of milk. For better texture, you can add a half cup of almond, coconut, or oat milk. Whisk these two together and then add a pinch of salt, a teaspoon of vanilla extract, one teaspoon of sugar, and a small quantity of cinnamon. If you want to make cinnamon’s flavor dominant, add two and a half spoons of cinnamon. Whisk together all the ingredients until you see a smooth batter in the bowl.

Next, dip about eight pieces of bread in the prepared mixture one by one. Give each of them ample time to soak. You can then fry each piece in butter until each side appears brown. In the end, you will have about 8-pieces of delicious French toasts to serve four people.

Is it okay to make French Toast Ahead?

Yes! French Toast is one of the few foods that you can prepare ahead of mealtime. You can prepare the batter 24 hours earlier or even three months earlier!

Just prepare the batter as instructed in the recipe and store it in an airtight container. And place this airtight container in the refrigerator (for 24 hours) or freezer (for three months). However, you will have to refer to the freezer’s instructions before freezing the batter. Some freezers may not be capable of keeping the better use for such long lengths of time.

It can prove to be handy if you seem to have lethargic mornings. If you’ve to prepare French toasts for high tea or a gathering, you can prepare French toasts 30 minutes earlier. Just keep them in the oven at 250°F on a baking sheet.
